Some "lucky" students have it easy: they apply, they get invited to first-round interviews at Morgan Stanley and Evercore. Simple.

But for the vast majority of them, landing IBD interviews feels like an impossible task.

A referral is when someone who has sufficient influence within a firm endorses your application internally, leading HR to put you on the list of “shortlisted candidates”.

Candidates who are invited to interviews were very likely referred by someone working inside the bank - whether they know it or not.

Since HR departments have to filter through tens of thousands of candidates, they rely on employee referrals to reduce the pool of candidates invited for the first interview round.

Once you obtain a powerful enough referral, you are virtually guaranteed to be invited for an interview, no matter how selective the investment bank is.

The question is: how do you get referred by someone? 

What exact steps can you take to get multiple referrals from senior investment bankers, and land several interviews as fast as possible?

How to secure dozens of referrals and interviews without doing a single networking event

From experience, I can tell you that the most effective way to secure referrals and interviews is to network with investment bankers.

Now, I know what you're thinking...

Many students roll their eyes to the sky when they hear the word "networking". 

That's because the internet is filled with vague articles repeating you that networking is key, without actually showing you HOW to do it.

But let me reassure you: 

With the networking strategy that I'm about to present, you'll know exactly what steps to follow, and you won't need to step a single foot outside your house to land multiple interviews fast. 

This is the exact strategy I've used to land my very first internship at Lazard with ZERO experience, and coming from a university which you only go to when you have no other choices…

Before I present you this strategy, let me first clarify what networking really is about:

What You think networking is:

  • Putting their best suit and go to random networking events packed with sweaty students who don't really want to be there.
  • ​​Asking stupid questions to recruiters in the hope that their CV will magically get retained.
  • ​​Engaging in awkward small talk with other candidates, pretending to have fun, just because they're too afraid to speak to recruiters directly.
    

What networking really is:

  • Connecting with bankers directly, not recruiters (bankers make the referrals, not recruiters).
  • Cold emailing bankers and jumping on 1-on-1 calls with them.
  • Asking simple and sound questions, and carefully listening to their answers with genuine curiosity.
  • Having enough fun during these conversations to be in a position to ask for an internal endorsement directly.

The no-bs definition of networking:

At the end of the day, networking is just about connecting with someone in a position of power, and giving enough value to this person to make her want to help you in return.
You give value to someone, and this person will reward you with value in return. It's the foundation of every human transaction.

What is the most effective way to prepare for your IBD interviews to secure the best offers?

As you may know, getting invited to interviews is only one part of the equation.

Investment banking interviews are extremely hard, and if you're not well prepared, both on the fit and technical side, you will never make it to the offer.

So, what can you do to dramatically increase your chances of smashing your interviews? What exact questions should you prepare? What specific finance topic should you work on?

This is what we're going to see now.

If we cut all the nonsense, there are three things that matter more than anything else to be consistently successful in IBD interviews:

Success Factor #1:  The way you present your story, by answering fit questions like “Tell me about yourself” or “Walk me through your resume”. 


They may look like simple questions, yet most candidates fail to deliver genuinely good answers to these fit questions (including myself when I was starting out).

Many highly talented and qualified candidates get wiped out from the process because they fail to present themselves convincingly (I've seen this happening more times than I can count...)

Success Factor #2: Your ability to master technical knowledge, including critical financial concepts such as Enterprise Value, DCF Valuation, TMV, IRR, LBO modelling, and many more.


IBD interviews can get extremely technical.

Even if you’re looking for internships, and even if you come from a non-financial background, you’re going to get grilled with technical questions.

The only way to crack these highly technical interviews is to master all the key financial concepts that you need to understand to break into IBD.

Success Factor #3:  Your ability to anticipate the interview questions that you will get on the big day, including fit, technical, and brainteasing questions.


Even “finance wizards” that are extremely well prepared on the technical side can fail their interviews if they don’t know exactly what questions to expect.

The format of IBD interview questions is significantly different from the tests student get at university. And when you’re not familiar with this format, it’s very easy to get confused and lose your means under pressure.
